Protecting a Dachshund’s back: stairs, jumps and exercise

Long back, short legs: that shape makes the Dachshund unmistakable – and makes its spine vulnerable. A few habits introduced from day one can prevent a lot.

Stairs

A few steps are no problem. Several floors several times a day are, over time. If there’s no lift, carry your Dachshund – especially in its first year, while bones and muscles are still growing.

Indoors too: stairs the puppy shouldn’t use alone are best closed off with a stair gate.

Sofa and bed

Jumping down strains the back far more than climbing up. A small ramp or set of steps by the sofa and bed is one of the best purchases for a Dachshund. Train it with treats until it uses it by itself.

Lifting and carrying correctly

  1. One hand under the chest

    Just behind the front legs.

  2. One hand under the hindquarters

    So the back stays supported.

  3. Keep it horizontal

    Never lift by the front legs or under the belly alone, never hold it upright.

  4. Put it down gently

    Back legs first, then front legs – without letting it jump.

Exercise that does it good

Daily walks strengthen the muscles that support the back. Steady walking, sniffing, easy terrain: ideal. Acrobatic jumping, frisbee or constant stair running: better not.

A harness spreads pulling force better than a collar – especially on a dog that leads with its nose. And excess weight counts double for a Dachshund: see Dachshund growth and weight.

Aids that help

  • a ramp or dog steps by the sofa and bed;
  • a stair gate for steps it shouldn’t take alone;
  • non-slip runners on smooth floors;
  • a well-fitting chest harness instead of a collar;
  • a ramp or crate for getting into the car.

See a vet straight away if…

… your Dachshund suddenly won’t jump, yelps when lifted, hunches its back, walks unsteadily or drags its hind legs. With back problems, time matters – don’t wait to see whether it passes.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Dachshund use stairs at all?

The occasional short flight is fine. Avoid several floors every day, especially while it’s growing, and carry it instead.
