The Dachshund is a small dog with a big personality: brave, independent, with an excellent nose and a voice you can’t miss. With its family it is devoted and affectionate.
In Barletta we raise smooth-haired and long-haired Dachshunds in our home. Here is what defines the breed and how to meet a Dachshund puppy from Italy.

Temperament: a pocket-sized hunter
The Dachshund was bred to work underground, alone and without instructions. That is where its courage, stamina and mind of its own come from. It weighs up whether a command is worth it – yet with rewards, calm and repetition it learns willingly.
It reliably announces noises and visitors. If you live somewhere with thin walls, work on this early. More in Dachshund temperament.
The back needs attention
Long back, short legs: with a Dachshund it pays to watch stairs, jumps off the sofa and weight from the very start. A ramp by the sofa, carrying it up long flights of stairs and keeping it slim are simple habits that make a big difference. Everything in Back, stairs and exercise.

- microchip, vaccinations and treatments appropriate to age;
- for travel: EU pet passport with a valid rabies vaccination and an official health certificate;
- on request, the parents’ genetic test results;
- a puppy kit for the first bath and our support after arrival.
Travelling to your country
A Dachshund puppy travels abroad at 15 weeks at the earliest, with a valid rabies vaccination and an official health certificate. We plan the handover with you: in person by Gianni or Aldo, or with authorised animal transporters. Details in Travel & documents.

Frequently asked questions
Smooth or long-haired – which needs less care?
Smooth-haired needs almost nothing but feels the cold more. Long-haired is soft and elegant and needs brushing several times a week. See Dachshund coat types.
Is a Dachshund a good first dog?
Yes, if you bring patience and consistency. It isn’t difficult, it’s independent. Short, friendly daily sessions work best.
Do you breed wire-haired Dachshunds?
No. We breed smooth-haired and long-haired Dachshunds.
