Dachshund growth and weight: slim is healthy
With a Dachshund, weight is more than a number: every extra kilo presses on that long back. Here’s how a puppy grows and how to recognise the right body shape.
How a Dachshund puppy grows
The puppy grows quickly in the first months, then more slowly. Under the FCI standard its size is classified by chest girth, and only from 15 months – until then the ribcage is still developing.
Every puppy grows at its own pace. Online charts are only rough guides; old “maximum weights” often come from earlier versions of the standard.
The right body shape
You should be able to feel the ribs with light pressure, but not see them. From above there’s a visible waist behind the ribcage; from the side the belly tucks up slightly. A Dachshund whose belly almost brushes the ground is carrying too much.
On a long-haired dog the coat can easily deceive – trust your hands more than your eyes.
Why weight matters so much
The long back is supported by muscles and ligaments. Extra weight increases the load with every step, stair and jump. A slim, muscular Dachshund moves more easily and protects its spine. More in Back, stairs and exercise.
Feeding in the first year
Puppies get several small meals a day, later two. When to switch to adult food and how big the daily ration should be is something to decide with your vet, who sees the body shape and knows the weight curve.
Between four and seven months the Dachshund changes its teeth. Chews help – but count them in the day’s ration.
Keeping your Dachshund slim
- weigh the food rather than judging by eye;
- subtract treats from the daily ration;
- nothing from the table – Dachshunds are patient beggars;
- weigh the dog regularly and note it down;
- daily exercise on level ground rather than running up and down stairs;
- if in doubt, agree a target weight with your vet.

How much does a Miniature Dachshund weigh?
