Your puppy’s first days at home

After a long journey everything is new for the puppy: smells, voices, sounds, its bed. The first days shape how safe it feels. Less is more here.

Arrival

Let it relieve itself outside in a quiet spot first, then go in. Show it the water, its bed and the room where it will spend the first days. It can discover the rest of the home bit by bit.

Many puppies are tired after the journey and sleep a lot. That’s normal – let it sleep.

Familiar food

For the first days, feed the same food at the same times as before. Any change comes later and gradually – after talking to your vet. Soft stools in the first days can be down to excitement; if they continue, ask the vet.

The first nights

Many puppies sleep better in the first nights if their bed or crate is close to yours. You can reassure it without taking it out straight away, and you’ll notice if it needs to go out at night.

Later you can move the bed step by step to its permanent place.

House training

  1. After sleeping, eating and playing

    Take it straight to the same spot – outside or to the pad.

  2. Praise

    At the exact moment it gets it right, calmly and kindly.

  3. No scolding

    Clean up accidents without a word, using an odour-neutralising product.

  4. Patience

    Every puppy learns at its own pace. Setbacks are normal.

The first week at a glance

  1. Day 1

    Arrive, sleep, water and the usual food. No visitors.

  2. Days 2 and 3

    Fixed times for meals, sleep and going out. First vet visit.

  3. Days 4 to 7

    Short walks somewhere quiet, first exercises with its name, brief moments alone in the next room.

Visitors and new experiences

Family and friends want to see the puppy straight away. Ask them to wait a few days. Once it has settled, calm meetings are great socialisation.

Frequently asked questions

My puppy cries at night. What should I do?

Put its bed near you, stay calm and take it out briefly if it needs to go. After a few nights things usually get much better.
