Training a Poodle puppy: calm, consistent and reward-based
Poodles learn fast, so training them is a pleasure. The key is consistency: few rules, always the same, and lots of small positive moments spread through the day.
Few rules, the same for everyone
Decide before it arrives what’s allowed: sofa or not, where it sleeps, where it eats, which rooms are off limits. Then the whole family sticks to it. A Poodle that’s allowed something by one person and forbidden it by another mainly learns whom to ask.
The words should be the same too: if one person says “sit” and another “sit down”, the puppy hears two different things.
Harness and lead
Start indoors: put the harness on for a few minutes while it plays or gets a treat. Then clip on the lead and let it follow you down the hallway. Outside, the first walks are short and undemanding – sniffing is already work.
For a small dog a harness is usually more comfortable than a collar, because it doesn’t pull on the neck.
Learning to be alone
Seconds
Leave the room briefly and come back before it gets restless – no big greeting.
Minutes
Extend the time slowly. A chew and a quiet spot help.
Leaving the home
Only once several relaxed minutes in the next room work do you step out of the door.
Step back if needed
If it cries for long or destroys things, go back a step and build up more slowly.
Reward, don’t punish
Reward the right behaviour the moment it happens: toileting in the right place, calm when the doorbell rings, coming back when called. With a sensitive dog like the Poodle, punishment produces fear rather than learning.

Socialisation: the world in small doses
In the first months the puppy forms its idea of what is normal and what is scary. Different people, city sounds, calm dogs, new surfaces, the car: introduce them one at a time and calmly, always leaving it the option of coming back to you.
When it can meet other dogs and where it can go is something to agree with your vet, depending on the vaccination schedule. Until then you can carry it in your arms or a bag so it already sees and hears the world.
