Male or female: real differences and myths
Many families have a clear idea before the first conversation: “We want a girl, they’re calmer.” Sometimes that’s true, often it isn’t. Here we separate practical differences from myths.
Practical differences

And temperament?
The differences between two dogs of the same sex are often bigger than those between a male and a female. Temperament, parents, rearing and training shape a dog more than its sex.
There are cuddly, calm males and confident, lively females – and the other way round. That’s why we’d rather hear how you live and what you’re looking for, then suggest the puppy that fits.
Seasons in everyday life
In small breeds the first season often arrives in the second half of the first year. She bleeds a little, may be more affectionate or more restless, and shouldn’t meet unneutered males on walks. Many owners use protective pants at home.
Males in the neighbourhood react: they eat less, are distracted or whine. That’s normal and it passes.

If there’s already a dog at home
With a second dog, sex matters more. A male and a female often get along easily; two females or two males can also do very well but sometimes need more time. Tell us about the dog you already have: age, temperament, experience with other dogs.
Neutering and spaying
Whether and when to neuter or spay is a medical decision. Discuss it with your vet in light of health, age and lifestyle – not as a routine, and not just because of behaviour.
