The Poodle coat: hardly sheds, but needs regular care
The coat is the reason many families choose a Poodle: curly, soft and almost no hair on the sofa. But “sheds little” doesn’t mean “no work” – quite the opposite.
Do Poodles shed?
Very little. Poodle hair grows continuously, and the hairs that come loose stay caught in the curls rather than landing on the floor. That’s why you see so little of it at home.
The downside: those hairs tangle close to the skin and form mats if nobody brushes them out. Mats pull, can irritate the skin and often can only be clipped off.
Poodles and allergies
No dog is truly hypoallergenic: allergens are also found in saliva and skin flakes. Many people with mild allergies cope better with a Poodle because it sheds so little. If you are allergic, though, talk to your doctor before deciding.
The care routine
Brushing
Several times a week, right down to the skin. Trouble spots: behind the ears, under the armpits, on the legs and wherever the harness rubs.
Bathing
When needed, with dog shampoo, often at grooming time. Afterwards, dry and brush thoroughly or the coat tangles as it dries.
Clipping
The coat never stops growing. Many owners visit a groomer every few weeks, depending on the length they like and how much they brush at home.

Check the ears, trim the hair between the pads, keep the corners of the eyes clean – ideally as part of the weekly routine.
The right tools
- a slicker brush for the curls;
- a metal comb to check you’re brushing down to the skin;
- dog shampoo and, if needed, a detangling spray;
- a hairdryer on a low heat setting.
Getting the puppy used to grooming
A puppy learns to accept the brush, dryer and grooming table best in short, relaxed sessions with a reward: two minutes of brushing today, handling the paws tomorrow, the dryer on its lowest setting the day after. A short, pleasant first visit to the groomer is worth more than a full clip.
