How much does a Poodle cost? What sets the price and what comes after
You won’t find a figure here: puppy prices depend on many factors and change over time. What you will find is what lies behind a fair price, which expenses follow, and when an offer should make you stop and think.
What goes into a puppy’s price
The price of a carefully raised puppy reflects everything that happened before handover:
- the choice and care of the parents, for example genetic tests;
- vet costs in the first weeks: vaccinations, treatments, check-ups, health certificate;
- microchip and paperwork; for travel abroad also the EU pet passport, rabies vaccination and official certificate;
- food, time and attention for the litter – for weeks, day and night;
- the handover arrangements, especially over long distances.
Ongoing costs

The first year is the most expensive
On top of the purchase price, the first year brings the starter kit, the last puppy vaccinations, perhaps puppy classes and the first grooming appointments. Set aside a separate budget so money never stops you doing what’s right for the dog.
Check before you buy
- does your lease or building allow dogs?
- is the dog covered by your liability insurance?
- who looks after the dog if you’re ill or away, and what does it cost?
- is there a groomer nearby, and how long is the wait?
When an offer should make you suspicious
- the price is far below normal;
- every colour and size is always available;
- the puppy is to arrive from abroad before 15 weeks;
- handover in a car park, papers “to follow”;
- payment in advance without a contract, video call or documents.
