How big will my Poodle get? Growth, weight and body shape

“How big will it get?” is one of the questions we hear most. The honest answer: it can be estimated, not guaranteed. Here is what we really know – and how to support your puppy’s growth well.

The standard measures height, not weight

The FCI standard classifies Poodles by the adult’s height at the withers – over 24 to 28 cm for the Toy, over 28 to 35 cm for the Miniature. It gives no reference weight.

Weight depends on bone structure, build and condition. Two Poodles of the same height can weigh differently and both be healthy.

The stages of growth

  1. The first months

    Fast growth: the puppy changes almost week by week. It needs puppy food and several small meals.

  2. Up to about a year

    Growth slows; final height is usually reached within the first year.

  3. After that

    It may still fill out a little: chest and muscles keep developing.

Every puppy has its own pace

Comparing with the neighbour’s dog or with online growth charts helps little. Littermates can develop differently, and growth spurts with pauses in between are normal.

Teething and adolescence

Between four and seven months the puppy changes its teeth. It chews more, sometimes eats less well and is easily distracted. Suitable chews help. Then comes adolescence, when some lessons seem “forgotten” for a while – patience and the familiar rules bring it back on track.

Supporting growth the right way

  • weigh the puppy regularly and write it down – your vet can then judge the curve;
  • feed according to age, following your vet’s advice;
  • don’t try to “keep it small” by feeding less, or make it bigger by feeding more;
  • check body shape with your hands: ribs you can feel but not see, a visible waist from above – curls easily hide the truth.

If the puppy doesn’t gain weight for several weeks, loses weight or eats noticeably less – and whenever you’re unsure about amount or type of food.

How much does a Toy Poodle weigh?

The standard doesn’t set a weight. What matters is a healthy shape for its height and build – your vet will help you judge it.
